Clitoria ternatea (butterfly pea), a plant species belonging to the Leguminosae (Fabaceae) family, is useful for medical treatments and has been used in folk medicines and to cure different diseases. The antioxidation ability of the total phenolic compounds of butterfly pea is useful for preserving flavor, and colour and for preventing vitamin destruction n skin barrier .
Blue butterfly pea is rich in polyphenols, or proanthocyanidin, and flavonoids, which stop the harmful effects of free radicals that damage and degrade skin. Proanthocyanidin is one of the most powerful antioxidants; it is able to increase the collagen and elasticity in skin cells. The result is firmer, plumper skin and a healthier complexion. Butterfly pea extract is very useful in Skin and Haircare, thanks to a high concentration of naturally occurring polyphenols (Proanthocyanidin or condensed Tannis) and flavonoids, a potent antioxidant. Specifically, proanthocyanidin, which stimulates the natural production of collagen and elastin .The antioxidants in blue butterfly pea flower can increase collagen production and prevent wrink lest also has anti-glycation properties, which are known to slow down aging of the skin. Because of these properties, Butterfly Pea flower is anti-inflammatory and is helpful in treating skin irritation, redness, itching, and allergies.Because butterfly pea flower contains plant-based antioxidants and antioxidant vitamins such as Vitamins A, C and E, it helps improve the skin’s natural barrier. This is the top layer of your skin called the stratum corneum, and its purpose is to protect your body from irritants, including allergens and bacteria. When the skin barrier is compromised, its strength is weakened. Topical antioxidants help improve the skin barrier Butterfly pea flower is a hidden skincare rockstar.
